Northern Virginia Battles Urban Sprawl With $600M Mixed-Use Plan
A recently announced mixed-use project in the Northern Virginia suburbs reflects a possible answer to controlling sprawl in booming exurban areas. In Loudoun County, one of the fastest-growing counties in the United States, Buchanan Partners is planning Arcola Center, a $600 million project combining retail, residential, hotel, office and other uses on a 400-acre site weest of Dulles International Airport. The project would be a departure from development patterns in an upscale market that has been characterized by urban sprawl.
