Last month, the board approved the construction of Arcola Center, another mixed-use development of almost 400 acres, to be located between Route 50 and Evergreen Mills Road, just west of Dulles Airport. Arcola is to include up to 1,169 residential units and more than 2.6 million square feet of commercial space, with an emphasis on office uses. A historic slave quarters from the early 1800s, which sits on the property, will be restored by the developer, Buchanan Partners, to create a tourist destination. Arcola was a major part of the discussions of the Route 50 Task Force, created in 2005 to make Route 50 a suitable "gateway" to Loudoun from the east. The development is to be built over the course of 10 to 20 years, with a 670,000-square-foot retail center to open in mid-2009.
